American contemporary artist Chris Burden exhibited his latest installation piece, “Metropolis II,” at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Burden has lived in Los Angeles since the 1960s, and the city has inspired much of his work. Metropolis II is a giant, complex kinetic sculpture, and it’s modelled on a fast-paced city of the future. The sculpture is composed of a steel beam skeleton, supporting an electric grid interwoven with an elaborate system of eighteen roads, train tracks, and hundreds of buildings. Every hour, the equivalent of approximately 100,000 cars whiz around the sculpture, giving off an ambient whir that the artist says creates tension for the viewer. Metropolis II is now on permanent display at the museum.
